Many teenagers in Norwalk and Westport would like orthodontic correction but prefer to avoid the appearance of braces. Invisalign Teen involves a series of nearly invisible removable trays that gradually align teeth and improve your smile.
Due to years of experience, our orthodontists at Westwalk Orthodontic Group in Norwalk and Westport are Preferred Providers of Invisalign Teen.
What is Invisalign Teen?
Instead of wires and brackets, Invisalign Teen uses custom-made removable aligners to straighten your teenager’s teeth. The clear trays fit over the teeth and accomplish gradual dental movement.
The trays work in a series, with each tray building on the dental movement accomplished with the previous tray. Your teenager changes the trays every two weeks to achieve efficient tooth movement. Due to the simplicity and aesthetic nature of Invisalign Teen, interest has dramatically increased in recent years among our patient base in Norwalk and Westport.
What is the difference between Invisalign and Invisalign Teen?
Compared to adults, teenagers have a higher likelihood of not wearing the clear trays for the appropriate amount of time. Invisalign Teen addresses this issue with built-in indicators that show the orthodontist if the trays are being worn adequately. So your Invisalign Teen dentist will know whether your teenager is being compliant. Invisalign for adults do not have these built-in indicators.
How many hours each day do you need to wear the trays?
For Invisalign Teen to work effectively, patients need to wear the trays 20 to 22 hours per day. Treatment will not progress without sufficient wear. So the trays are worn to school, after school, and to sleep. They should really only be removed for eating, brushing, flossing, and drinking any beverage besides water.
How often do you visit the orthodontist with Invisalign Teen?
In our Norwalk and Westport offices, we see patients with Invisalign Teen every six weeks on average to check progress, make necessary adjustments, answer questions, and ensure we are ready for the next set of trays.
Is Invisalign Teen painful?
Slight discomfort is typical for the first few days with each new set of trays. Tylenol or Advil are sometimes recommended during this time if needed.
Which is more effective, braces or Invisalign Teen?
Depending on the orthodontic issues at hand, Invisalign Teen can be as efficient as braces if the trays are worn as recommended.
Are there orthodontic issues that cannot be treated ideally with Invisalign Teen and require traditional orthodontic methods?
Yes. Certain orthodontic issues should not be corrected with Invisalign Teen. For instance, a narrow upper jaw would likely require a palatal expander to address the constriction. Palatal expansion cannot be accomplished with Invisalign Teen.
Underlying skeletal discrepancies (for example, a protrusive lower jaw) may require surgical intervention and would not be ideally treated with Invisalign Teen. Extreme crowding may require extraction of permanent teeth.
In the rare circumstance where permanent teeth should be extracted for orthodontic purposes, Invisalign teen is typically not recommended due to its limitations in closing extraction spaces.
What if a child loses one of the Invisalign Teen trays?
No problem. Invisalign Teen factors in that teenagers will be teenagers, so we understand if a few trays get lost during treatment. Please give us a call in our Norwalk office or Westport office and we will order replacements.
